What is the Consumer Defense Index (CDI)?


The CDI is a 4 category, 3 step, measurement of how compliant a companies’ terms of service are with the core values that consumer deserve. Each companies’ composite rating measures from 0 being the least compliant, to 4 being the most compliant.

Right to Dispute

(0 points) Company prevents any litigation, through arbitration or litigation

The agreement waives your ability to dispute

(0.5 points) Company only allows arbitration

The agreement only allows disputes through arbitration

(1 point) Company allows litigation

The agreement allows disputes through litigation no matter the reason of dispute. So, if the company only allows litigation in claims of sexual assault or any other specific case, they do NOT fill this requirement.

Right to Ownership

(0 points) There is no guarantee to products or service purchased.

Ex. A movie you purchased to “own” on video service no longer becomes accessible because of a license dispute. the video provider is not obligated to give you a refund.

(0.5 points) The company will reimburse the user in full amount for products or service purchased perpetuity but are now discontinued, non-functional, or unavailable.

Ex. A movie you purchased to “own” on video service no longer becomes accessible because of a license dispute. the video provider is obligated to give you a full (not partial) refund.

(1 point) Anything offered in perpetuity is available for local usage and guaranteed to work and is therefore irrevocable.

Ex. A movie you purchased to “own” can be download locally to a standard file (like .mp4)

Right to privacy

(0 points) There is no restrictions on the data collected about you.

Ex. You use notes app that collects unrestricted information, including device information, address, race, shopping habits.

(0.5 points) They collect non sensitive data outside of the reasonable scope of the agreement, but do so explicitly. Any sensitive data collected is within the reasonable scope of the agreement and must be stored and accessed securely using on site encryption and accessed using end-to-end encryption.

Ex. You agree to use a navigation app and are required to share your name (which would be out of the scope, but isn’t sensitive information). You are required to share your location (which is sensitive, but within the scope). The service specifically outlines that location data is dealt with securely.

Right to Keep

(0 points) Company sells sensitive data to advertisers

This includes, race, sexual orientation, address, SSN, payment details, location, religion, health, and advertisements based off content users store on their service (photos, videos, etc.).

(0.5 points) Company sells personally identifiable information to advertisers

Name, shopping habits, basic device information, etc.

(1 point) Company does not sell personally identifiable information to advertisers

Any information sold can in no way be tied to the user’s real-life identity (must be anonymous)
